SUMMARY:The Crankies with Katherine Fahey and Dan Van Allen
DESCRIPTION:The Lantern Sisters\, Katherine Fahey and Dan Van Allen\, are 
 based in Baltimore\, Maryland.\n\nKatherine Fahey is a a candid and thou
 ghtful multidisciplinary artist who combines the folk arts of storytellin
 g\, hand cut papercut artwork\, and shadow puppetry in the form of *cranki
 es (scrolling artwork inside a box). Katherine’s Crankies are often base
 d on folklore\, oral histories\, or songs as far reaching as the southern 
 swamps of Louisiana to the northern reaches of Inuit Quebec. Others are pe
 rsonal stories from her childhood in Virginia or the streets of her in Bal
 timore City.\n\nKatherine and Dan’s Crankie performances transport audie
 nces to another time and place\, with their authentic and personal interpr
 etations of folk tales\, oral histories\, and songs. Stories and songs s
 hift with the times\, uncovering new meanings in old words\, new ways of t
 alking about the communal pathways that led us to where we are today. Cra
 nkies are a way to interpret our uncertain times\, to draw artistic inspir
 ation and power from the sources of meaning in their lives. History\, comm
 unity\, folk tales\, ballads\, live performance\, and environmental instab
 ility all manifest in the sounds\, feelings\, and sensations that permeate
  their Crankies.\n\nJoining Katherine will be her performance partner pupp
 eteer and foley artist Dan Van Allen\, known also for antique furniture re
 storation and visionary art.\n\nMusic will be performed by Marian McLaughl
 in\, a multi-instrumental songwriter\, poet\, visual artist\, and educator
 .\n\n*Crankies are a bygone form of visual performance\, involving a crank
 ed scroll of artwork usually presented inside a box. Crankies are usually 
 shared live\, in darkened space\, which creates a warm feeling of sitting 
 around the fireside.
